In 2019, the leading causes of death in Africa were neonatal conditions, lower respiratory infections, and diarrheal diseases. When compared to the rest of the world, infections like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS are highly prevalent and contribute disproportionately to premature death. These conditions are reminiscent of the 19th century, where leading causes of death were infectious diseases. The disparities in developing countries cut across myriad sectors of society, but are most prominent
where it matters the most.
Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa, and is projected to overtake China in 2100 as the second-most populous country in the world (IHME 2020 report). Health outcomes and Life expectancy in Nigeria are poor because of vastly underfunded health systems and lack of trust in public services. These conditions leave a significant opportunity to change the course of thousands of lives.
Zebulon Foundation was created in 2022 by Dr. Kemi Olugemo, a Nigerian American Physician-Scientist and healthcare advocate. Born in Nigeria, with formative years in the United Kingdom and The Netherlands, Olugemo quickly witnessed the vast differences in access to basic healthcare services among developed and developing countries. Over the ensuing years, as Kemi trained in medicine, the importance of prompt diagnosis and care for common treatable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease was evident both professionally and personally. Like many fellow Nigerians, Olugemo witnessed close friends and loved ones die or become disabled due to lack of routine and specialty medical care.
“I realized very quickly that I needed to be the change I want to see, and to take a step, no matter how small, in the right direction.” Kemi Olugemo
The Foundation aims to close gaps in indigent healthcare in Nigeria by establishing a mobile clinic staffed with rotating culturally competent healthcare providers. Our first major event will occur from August 5 through 6, 2023, with a focus on health education, screening and diagnosis of common treatable conditions. An onsite pharmacy will be available, as well as referrals for specialty care.
